ICAS disappoints with private hearings

News Article - 24 May 2012
Category:

The decision by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland not to hold hearings in public has been described as a "disappointment" by one publication.

Website Accountancy Age states that hearings held at the institute will be shrouded in secrecy unless it keeps with the times and follows the lead of other organisations, such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

The ICAEW chose to open its doors to the public on the back of guidance from the Professional Oversight Board (POB).

Director of POB, Paula George, told Financial Director: "ICAS [has said] why it does not comply; we respect that right even if we do not agree with it."

Accountancy Age states that it is a shame that the institute fails to follow the precedent of holding public hearings which was first set by holding jury trials.

"At a time when many in the profession are attempting to modernise regulation this is a disappointment," it adds.
