ICAEW issues PBR wish list

News Article - 09 October 2007

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) has issued a "wish list" to Alistair Darling ahead of his first pre-Budget report (PBR).

According to the accountancy body, the recently-installed chancellor should work to create higher levels of customer service and increase resources to boost taxpayer services.

Frank Haskew, head of the ICAEW's Tax Faculty, commented: "Smaller businesses in particular are struggling with the UK's complicated tax system.

"Combined with having to deal with the burden of regulation, this is particularly affecting SMEs' ability to grow."

In addition, the body has urged Mr Darling to commit to tax simplification. Other recommendations include the prioritisation of management skills and careful consideration if which taxes are referred to as green.

Michael Izza, chief executive of the ICAEW, recently said the label green tax should only be applied to those which actively reduce pollution, rather than levies such as air passenger duty.
