ICAEW calls for skills council accountancy recognition

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) is calling upon the government to allow the Financial Services Skills Council to include accountancy within its remit.

Earlier this month, spokesman for the organisation Dr Raymond Madden urged the skills council to recognise how important finance professionals would be to the UK's economy in the future.

"The professions are vital to UK competitiveness and a major export," he said at a breakfast hosted by the Parliamentary Business, Finance and Accountancy Group.

Dr Madden added accountancy should be part of the skills council's remit and have "a seat at the table".

The council, which is licensed by the government, works with employers to offer training to workers to help develop the industry and what it claims is the "world's leading international financial services centre".

Currently, many financial institutions are members of the council, including building societies and banks from across the UK.
