HR departments groaning under weight of CVs

Many recruiters are struggling to cope with the administrative
burden of recruitment and selection due to a significant increase
in applications. HR departments are under considerable pressure to
sift through mountains of applications from external candidates and
current employees desperate to work their way up the career
ladder.
Recent reports revealed that December saw the first rise in
joblessness for six months, to 2.5m. With economic conditions
likely to deteriorate over the next quarter as the full impact of
the Government's austerity measures take hold, employment may well
continue to worsen.
The escalating unemployment problem means that classic HR
systems are being overwhelmed, with many businesses risking losing
out on key talent as a result of understaffed departments.
Recent figures from financial recruitment consultancy firm
Morgan McKinley reveals jobs in the City of London alone have
fallen by 66 per cent. This has led to a significant increase in
applications per position and a more competitive marketplace as a
result. A growing number of businesses are looking towards internal
promotion as a means of recruitment, reducing the job market
further.
Companies must consider implementing new ways of dealing with
recruitment and selection that are able to handle the growing
number of applicants and the reduced time available to HR
professionals. As the country faces one of its largest skills
shortages of all time, an inability to quickly identify key talent
may significant hamper a company's ability to develop a
professional and skilful workforce.
