Hogan fails top stop accounts probe

News Article - 04 September 2008
Category: Business

Australian actor Paul Hogan will face a tax probe by his home country into his US bank accounts after losing a legal battle.

He has been told to produce his "books, records, papers and other data" from his three American banks within 30 days.

Mr Hogan's legal team had asked US district court judge George King to dismiss a summons by the IRS on behalf of Australia's tax officials, but the judge ruled in favour of the authorities.

He wrote that Mr Hogan's attempts to block the investigation were "unsupported by case authority and without merit".

He added: "Petitioner's argument that the summonses are improper due to potential criminal proceedings in Australia is misplaced.

"The argument that the summonses are contrary to public policy ... is similarly rejected as meritless."

Mr Hogan claims he is being unfairly targeted and has said he will fight the investigation.

He is best known for his role as Crocodile Dundee in the films of the same name.
