HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has announced plans to move to a more modern IT platform in a bid to enhance services.

Some 12 geographical databases are to be replaced under the plans, which will provide access to one customer view of pay, national insurance (NI), tax and pension information, IT Week reports.

Chief information officer Steve Lamey told the publication that the move would improve services and help staff at HMRC to ensure tax amounts are correct while responding quicker to consumer queries.

"Much of the data we need is already on our NI system and the move enables us to avoid duplication of data," he added.

Head of the National Audit Office, Sir John Bourn, stated that HMRC's computer systems could not cope in situations where people regularly change their employer or have multiple jobs.

"This has led to employees paying too much or too little tax," he said, adding that the tax body had implemented some measures already to improve its services.
