HMRC responds to fears over delays

A significant number of small businesses are still waiting to receive the incentive offered for filing their tax returns online, it has been claimed.

According to Accountancy Age, thousands of small company owners may have to wait until December to receive the £150 incentive they were promised.

However, a spokesman for HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) said that fewer than ten per cent of the 1.3 million organisations who were eligible for the incentive have yet to receive theirs.

"Despite the current temporary delays, most cheques will be issued more quickly than they were last year and most employers will receive their payments before December," he remarked.

HMRC was recently criticised for a backlog in VAT registrations by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the Telegraph reports.

The ICAEW called upon the department to offer compensation to organisations affected by the delays.
