Companies considering business and
accounting software to help them control costs in the new year may be interested to know that hard drive destruction is not practical to firms as it is too unrestrained, according to one sector commentator.
Robert Winter, chief engineer of data recovery at Kroll Ontrack UK, said that the group would not recommend the method for this reason.
"The risks of drives going to the wrong location or someone at a third party not following procedure properly do leave you at risk," he explained.
Mr Winter added that housing data in a cloud would be a more secure way of storing information because a third party will look after the security and a business will not be left holding any confidential information.
Which? Computing recently reported that people disposing of their old computers could easily fall victim to identity theft - even if they delete files or wipe the hard drive.
Meanwhile, KPMGs Data Loss Barometer predicts that the number of individuals affected by data loss around the world could soar to 190 million in 2009, compared to 92 million in the previous year.
