Hampshire county council has been showcasing its 'green' IT
credentials at an international conference.
The local authority has been experimenting with new techniques to
reduce
carbon dioxide emissions, including green IT
technology and creating low-
carbon buildings.
Attending the Green IT 08 event in London earlier this month, the
county council provided businesses with information about ways to
deliver sustainable IT and technology strategies, Public
Technology.net reports.
Jos Creese, head of IT at Hampshire county council, told
delegates: "Green IT is beginning to dominate the business agenda
partly because it
accounts for two per cent of total global
emissions - the same as the airline industry,
but more so because it offers the potential to reduce energy costs
and the
carbon footprints of individuals,
communities and businesses."
Hampshire county council uses more than 6,500 thin-client
terminals in its offices across the county and has also started to
adopt thin-client laptops in a bid to conserve energy, saving an
estimated 1.4 gigawatt hours of electricity per year and boosting
data security.
Businesses concerned about their
carbon footprint can invest in
carbonaccounting software in order to improve their
green credentials and reduce their impact on the environment.
