Green jobs boom despite economic slump

News Article - 11 June 2008

Despite the recent credit crunch and economic slowdown, the 'green' jobs market in Britain has remained buoyant, a new report claims.

Companies are increasingly hiring people to boost their green credentials and reduce their carbon footprint in spite of growing economic pressures on many businesses.

A new report by UK-based environment and sustainability recruitment specialist Acre Resources indicates that layoffs in the financial and property sectors have not affected the green recruitment market.

The number of roles linked specifically to energy reduction and emissions management has almost tripled during the past 12 months, while the total increase in 'green collar jobs' between May 2007 and May 2008 was 20 per cent.

Andrew Cartland, Acre Resources managing director, said: "Big companies, from retailers to media companies and even petrochemical firms, have made very public pledges around their approach to green issues. They've committed to targets around reducing carbon emissions and developing more socially responsible products."

Smaller firms can invest in carbonaccounting software in order to enhance energy efficiency and reduce costs across their enterprise.
