Green IT 'increasingly popular'

News Article - 16 February 2009

Environmentally-friendly technology and IT - which may include carbonaccounting software - is becoming increasingly popular among businesses, largely because it helps them to control costs, one sector commentator has claimed.

James Murray, editor of BusinessGreen.com, said that the idea of having a greater control of energy consumption, such as automation which makes sure machines are turned off, was also proving popular.

He added that such automation controls were now being built into a lot of new PCs as standard and that each computer which included the software could result in a £30 to £40 saving a year.

"If you're a big bank with a fleet of tens of thousands of PCs, that becomes millions of pounds worth of energy savings, so those types of controls are becoming very popular," Mr Murray commented.

The Kyocera Environmental Office Research 2008 recently revealed that 27 per cent of businesses are trying to achieve carbon neutral status.
