Government to announce measures to expand apprenticeship schemes

News Article - 08 September 2011
Category: Business

The Government is expected to announce this week new measures to help simplify the apprenticeship process for larger employers.

The idea is to expand the Government's commitment to the expansion of apprenticeship schemes.

Skills minister John Hayes revealed plans to simplify payments, streamline contracts and a number of data returns and more at a CBI apprenticeship event earlier this month.

Hayes also confirmed that firms who contract directly with the Government to train apprentices will receive thorough guidance to manage their entire schemes from recruitment all the way through to assessment.

Hayes added: "I'm determined that more employers and learners than ever should have the opportunity to benefit from our unprecedented investment in apprenticeships. Where red tape and bureaucracy deters employers from taking on apprentices, we'll sweep it away."

The management of growing apprenticeship schemes places greater emphasis on the role of HR departments within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Standalone or integrated HR software can support small businesses through the entire aspect of the employee lifecycle, including the management of apprenticeship schemes.

The ability to address the important areas of training, learning and development within an apprenticeship scheme enables SMEs to maximise the knowledge of their trainee's needs and abilities.

Susan Anderson, CBI director for education and skills policy, welcomes the report and the Government's commitment to expanding apprenticeship schemes.

"Apprenticeships are vital to developing the skills that support economic growth and many employers already deliver excellent programmes. Cutting bureaucracy will support even more businesses to become involved and these recommendations set out the right path for reform," she said.

"They recognise that employers are primarily concerned with the day-to-day running of their businesses, and that they are committed to offering high-quality training as their reputation and business success depends on this. We will work with the Government to take these plans forward."
