Government slammed over green taxes

News Article - 23 May 2012
Category:

The government has been criticised over its practices regarding green taxes.

Of the £29.3 billion generated each year, the authority hands two per cent back to taxpayers, something that has led it to come under fire from one expert.

These figures were obtained by UHY Hacker Young via the Freedom of Information Act.

Roy Maugham, tax partner at UHY Hacker Young, said: "It's surprising just how lopsided the government's approach to green taxes has been over the last ten years."

He also claimed that many taxpayers are sceptical regarding the real reason behind green taxes, with some believing they are merely a cash cow. The government must "put its money where its mouth is", he added.

The climate change issue, which is currently high on the political agenda, has seen green taxes introduced, including those on budget airlines due to fears over the polluting effects of aeroplane fuel.
