UK companies wishing to monitor business progress may find that a consumer spending study can help them to look at what they need to do in order to rescue their share of consumers' discretionary spend, following the advice of one sector commentator.
The project from research organisation BDRC - which aims to help businesses find the best way to adapt to changes in spending - found that consumers would be cutting back on eating out, day trips, going to the cinema and other leisure pursuits.
Mark Long, director of the BDRC, said he believed this would aid businesses to understand how they can deliver additional value in their service.
In addition, he noted it would also help firms "begin to think about how they market promotions in order to offer customers the best value possible, as value for money is now almost certainly the business battleground".
The study also found that six out of ten Britons have cut back their spending, despite many feeling no adverse effects of the recession.
