Businesses are going green and accounting for carbon in order to cut their overheads, rather than making changes for the environment, one sector commentator has claimed.

James Murray, editor of BusinessGreen.com, said that green technology - which may include carbonaccounting software - was a "pretty high priority" for many IT departments as it allowed them to demonstrate a good return on investment.

He pointed to virtualisation as one of these, which could make energy savings of around 70 to 80 per cent.

"There's a strong commercial case for these types of projects and the [reduction in] CO2 emissions come in as a happy upside. There's a case for doing it regardless of the environmental case," Mr Murray explained.

The Kyocera Environmental Office Research 2008 recently revealed that only 18 per cent of respondents offset carbon emissions and just 25 per cent use environmentally conscious suppliers.

However, 58 per cent of IT or technology businesses are now aiming to be carbon neutral.
