Getting protected

News Article - 20 January 2009

As businesses expand their online presence - which may give them the competitive edge and allow them to control costs - they should be thinking about how to protect data against outside intrusion.

Such is the assertion of James Cope, an eBusiness adviser at Business Link, who said that many companies were now taking action by putting more policies in place about email usage and browsing.

"Whereas before it was an afterthought it is now a priority to protect data such as client details," he added.

Mr Cope went on to note that his group had seen a couple of attacks on small businesses that had been using older technology or websites that were easy to hack.

Finjan's Web Security survey recently found that enterprises have increased their IT security budgets for 2009 while their overall IT spending has tended to be reduced.

The survey also found that the upward trend in IT security budget allocation was more pronounced in the financial and governmental sectors than in others.
