Pressure on UK firms to cut their carbon footprint looks set to increase after world leaders this week agreed targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 per cent before 2050.

At a G8 meeting in Toyako, Japan, statesmen indicated they would work with other countries involved in UN climate change talks to achieve this goal.

The importance of setting interim targets was also discussed but no firm dates were set for this.

Today's statement goes substantially further than last year's G8 talks in which leaders only promised to "seriously consider" halving global emissions by mid-century.

Firms are expected to play a big part in achieving the target, with carbonaccounting software installations one of the ways to implement green business.

Last week UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon told diplomats in Seoul that bosses must prioritise corporate social responsibility and start doing more to tackle environmental issues.
