Speaking recently at an event organised by the Institute for
Manufacturing and the FDF, academics and business leaders claimed
that clear, long term legislative changes are needed by the food
and drink manufacturing industry in order to reach its full
potential.
Of the main issues facing the sector, the panellists emphasised
a lack of direction from the Government regarding where the
sector's future lies. This problem is compounded by the real threat
of unexpected and rapid legislation that could significantly affect
operations and lessen confidence amongst industry players.
The event was chaired by Nick Hussey, director of Manufacturing
Insight. The umbrella company was established in conjunction with
the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the Regional
Development Agencies and the employer's federation EEF to raise the
prominence of manufacturing issues.
High level executives at both Kraft foods and the interest group
the Food and Drink Federation have emphasised the importance of
Government legislation to the long-term success of the sector. Nick
Bunker, UK and Ireland president for Kraft foods, said: "It's not a
question of funding; it's much more about the stability and
consistency of regulation. This is crucial if companies are
encouraged to invest."
Craig Such, supply chain MD at Access, echoes these
thoughts:
"In the competitive post-recession climate, the food and
manufacturing sector would significantly benefit from more clarity
from Government on its legislative intentions. Clearer legislation
would not only help companies more accurately predict their
financial future but would also help to flag up potential issues
affecting long-term stability."
Clearer legislation would no doubt help firms in the food and
drink manufacturing industry operate more efficiently. Companies
must also take steps to address internal inefficiencies in order to
make the most of market conditions in the post-recession climate.
