Employees in the finance industry are finding their work lives as hard to switch off as their BlackBerrys, research has found.

A study by employment group Robert Half discovered that 40 per cent of such employees take their mobile devices or laptops when not in work, with many even carrying them on holiday.

Moreover, 12 per cent of respondents said they worked every weekend, with one in three conducting the duties of their role outside normal office hours. 14 per cent claimed they could not relax if they had no contact with their offices.

The study stated: "As working hours increase, financial professionals around the globe find they are increasingly responding to emails and taking phone calls during the evening."

However, figures from the Office of National Statistics' Labour Force Survey found that the average weekly hours worked in falling in the UK, the Western Mail reports.
