More than two-thirds of female accountants believe they have as many career opportunities as men, according to new research.

The survey by specialist financial recruiter Elements found that of these two-thirds, the majority felt that there are more women in the financial profession than ever before.

However, among more senior female finance professionals, many claimed they have had to work harder to get where they are than their male counterparts. Seven in ten cited having a family as the biggest barrier to getting ahead at work.

"We have found that clients are much more concerned about recruiting the best talent - in my experience, the issue of gender just doesn't arise," said chief executive of Elements Paul Bibby.

More than 50 per cent of respondents were optimistic about the future of gender equality in the industry.

A recent report by the Institute of Directors claimed that the difference in pay between male and female directors of companies or public bodies has widened to 22 per cent, compared to 19 per cent in 2006.
