A rising number of people are exaggerating their expenses claims, according to a new survey.

The study conducted by YouGov on behalf of GlobalExpense found that a third of those surveyed admitted to making false claims, compared with a quarter in 2001, Personnel Today reports.

Additionally, 41 per cent of respondents who thought it was acceptable to exaggerate their claims choose to do by between ten and 25 per cent.

David Vine, managing director of GlobalExpense, said: "Employees are clearly becoming far more cynical towards their employers and feel entitled to cheat on their expenses if they think the company isn't paying them their dues."

As such scams can amount to millions of pounds, business ought to take action before this trend becomes "ingrained", Mr Vine said.

In related news, Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets recently reported that feelings of high job security helped to boost consumer confidence in August.
