Absentee rates in the non-profit sector could be having a negative impact on productivity, if the results of a new survey are anything to go by.

Research by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) reveals the average level of employee absence in the sector was 4.2 per cent of working time lost, compared with 3.6 per cent the previous year, Charity Finance reports.

In public sector organisations the figure stands at 4.5 per cent and for private sector companies it is 3.2 per cent.

Of the non-profit organisations questioned, charity services and housing associations recorded the highest levels of absence at an average of 4.6 per cent.

This is an increase of 2.8 and four per cent respectively compared with last year's figures.

Those organisations that had seen absences fall most often attributed the change to improved absence monitoring.

In other non-profit sector news, Charity Finance reports the government's citizenship survey shows there has been little increase in the number of people volunteering since 2001.
