Employees 'play an important role in going green'

Employees can play an important role in encouraging their workplace colleagues and managers to begin accounting for carbon, one sector commentator has claimed.

Lara Conaway, Morgan Lovell's sustainability manager, said that companies should take the time to ensure that there are dedicated members of staff who have responsibility for energy reduction included in their job description - which could be one of a firm's business goals for the new year.

She added that management may also wish to consider giving such workers a pay incentive in order to increase efficiencies.

"Staff can not only help in the efficiency drive but they expect employers to be doing something about it. Engage the staff in what you are doing," Ms Conaway explained.

Recent figures featured in the Guardian revealed that public buildings in England and Wales are emitting 11 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, more than Kenya's entire carbon footprint.
