Chartered accountants in business now earn an average of almost £80,000, a study has shown.

The research, conducted jointly by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and recruitment consultancy Robert Half, also found that three per cent of accountants now earn more than £175,000 each year.

Wage packets varied depending upon the sector, with accountants in retail and wholesale earning £70,000, those in manufacturing and engineering receiving £71,000 and financial services sector roles earning up to £85,000.

Phil Sheridan, managing director of Robert Half Finance & Accounting, said: "These salaries are very much reflective of the demand that exists today for skilled finance professionals."

Meanwhile, those with the ACA industry qualification were found to be entitled to bonuses of up to £29,000 on average.

A study earlier this month by the Institute of Management Accountants found that American accountants earn an average of $102,393 (£51,343) a year.
