The demand for qualified accountants has remained strong despite the UK's economic problems, according to a recruitment company.

Teresa Thorrington-Allen, national director of Hays Senior Finance, said that her company was reporting a large number of requests for accountants in all sectors and all parts of the country.

She added that skilled accountants were "reaping the benefits" of the candidate-driven market, and revealed that this was "unlikely to change".

"Qualified accountants will always be in demand and those that ensure they are at the top of their game should never have cause to worry," she concluded.

Unemployment has been in the news recently after the latest figures on the subject from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

They showed that the UK's unemployment rate was now 5.8 per cent, equating to some 1.82 million people.

This marked the largest number of people out of work in eleven years and showed an increase of 0.4 per cent over the third quarter of 2008.
