Data centres 'failing to cut energy use'

Data centres need to do more in order to meet environmental targets
and reduce
carbon emissions, new research indicates.
A poll of 100 data centre professionals indicated that many were
either unwilling or unable to commit to environmental
initiatives.
The research by the Aperture Research Institute (API) discovered
that, although 70 per cent of respondents have adopted green
measures, 20 per cent have not addressed environmental issues for
data centres.
Companies looking to reduce their impact on the environment and
boost their green credentials can invest in
carbonaccounting software to identify potential
savings in data centres and other departments.
Almost three-quarters of the data centre professionals surveyed
stated that they would not be prepared to use energy-saving devices
if they would compromise performance.
Steve Yellen, principal of the API, said: "Although many
organisations have made a commitment to cutting their environmental
impact, when it comes to the data centre, most lack the tools and
processes they need if they are to deliver on that promise."
A recent report by Reuters indicated that firms are increasingly
looking at ways to reduce their
carbon footprints
and are turning to energy-saving IT devices in order to do so.
