Consumers are beginning to expect a certain level of environmental credentials from businesses they work with, according to one sector commentator, which could prompt firms to begin
accounting for
carbon emissions.
Erica Russell, a Business Link adviser, said additional companies were now being asked for green strategies and even something as simple as an environmental policy.
"We also are beginning to see more and more of the public procures, that might be local councils, big government schemes, or it might be the London 2012 games, wanting to work with companies that are greener, that's becoming quite important there," she added.
Ms Russell went on to note that it was important that firms looked at their own risks to make sure they complied with environmental legislation.
According to statistics on green business on Startups' website, the combined annual energy bill of the small business sector currently is £3.5 billion.
However, each small enterprise could save £7,000 if they improved their energy efficiency.
