Control costs 'with travel budget cut'

News Article - 26 February 2009

Businesses would be able to control costs and begin accounting for emissions if they tackled the two separate agendas together, one sector commentator has claimed.

Jean Leston, WWF climate change team's transport policy officer, said that working in this way would be the "perfect win-win convergence" between the two business plans.

"A lot of different companies tell us we have a policy of trying to reduce our CO2 and travel by 20 per cent and we have achieved cuts in our travel budget by 30 per cent," she noted.

Ms Leston explained that aviation did not completely reflect its environmental cost.

This was because flying had multiple effects on climate damage, which had not been considered in a lot of carbon reduction strategies.

According to a recent report from the World Travel and Tourism Council, one key commitment in the battle against climate change should be a 50 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2035 over 2005 levels.
