Businesses considering accounting software integration may be interested to hear that online revenue is increasingly flowing away from the content creators and to the search engines, one sector commentator has claimed.

Carolyn McCall, chief executive of Guardian Media Group - speaking at the Joint Westminster eForum & Westminster Media Forum keynote seminar: Digital Britain - said that search engines were "important clients" as they were marketing channels which drove traffic to web pages.

However, she added: "Search engines do not invest anything in content at a time when content providers are finding it really difficult to do so themselves."

And although search engines did drive an "enormous" amount of traffic that could be monetised, the display model was "extremely difficult".

In recent weeks, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform published its action plan to secure Britain's place at the forefront of the global digital economy.

The scheme included plans to secure a dynamic investment climate for UK digital content and services.
