Firms which aim to be successful are being urged not to ignore Web 2.0 technologies such as social networking sites.

According to analysis business Gartner, mobile technology, user interfaces and Web 2.0 applications could all have transformational effects upon companies over the next ten years.

"Web 2.0 continues to be a major area of activity in the enterprise this year. We will see companies steadily gain more experience and success with Web 2.0," said Jackie Fenn, a Gartner research fellow.

The term refers to second generation technology which allows web users to collaborate with each other via mediums such as social networking sites or wikis – websites which allow visitors to edit the content.

Gartner's Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies report added that there is now greater innovation in relation to user interface features, such as gesture recognition.

Firms including Microsoft have developed gesture recognition technologies, in which a computer can recognise human movements.
