Companies 'can be more efficient with smart driving'

News Article - 13 February 2009

By promoting green driving techniques, businesses can cut down their fuel bills, save thousands of pounds and begin accounting for carbon emissions, one sector commentator has claimed.

Robbie McKinnon from the Energy Saving Trust said that smarter driving techniques can save a company with a fleet of one hundred vehicles £90,000, which he added was a "huge saving".

He explained: "On average this could save you about 15 per cent or about £ 250 a year on fuel."

The techniques Mr McKinnon outlined included advising employees to change through the gears early, remain in a high gear as much as possible and take the foot off the accelerator when going down a hill.

Meanwhile, the government has committed to supporting businesses that both purchase and use cleaner cars.

At the 2008 Budget, officials announced their intention to modernise the tax relief for business expenditure on cars by adopting a carbon dioxide emissions-based approach.
