Commuters accounting for carbon

News Article - 09 February 2009
Category:

Commuters who are keen to begin accounting for carbon emissions should be awarded a US-style season ticket tax break, it has been suggested.

Steven Joseph, executive director at Campaign for Better Transport, said that the benefit of a tax break system would be that it gave a green incentive for people to choose alternative means of transport to the car.

He added that individuals may be able to claim up to £400 a year and also reward those who were well-off and travelled long distances for their work.

"It will help companies who want to reduce their company car park and make better use of the land by making [it] easier for people to get into work by other means," Mr Joseph added.

According to a survey sponsored by Plantronics, more than one-third of individual employees were travelling less on business over the past year, with 42 per cent of that group reporting their corporate travel had been cut in half.
