CIPFA calls for clever spending

News Article - 12 October 2007

The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) has called upon local government bodies to be sensible with the way they spend money.

Authorities must ensure they are using money wisely and reducing costs without creating a situation where the level of service provision falls dramatically, claimed the organisation.

The body commented in the wake of the comprehensive spending review, which it said posed a number of challenges yet presented companies with optimism as they are able to respond constructively.

Steve Freer, CIPFA chief executive, commented: "We have the opportunity to ensure that strong financial management, value for money and efficiency become absolutely central to the vision of local government and other public services for years to come."

Meanwhile CIPFA Networks assistant director Peter Connolly warned that the reduced costs used for service delivery cannot be allowed to reduce standards.
