CIOs believe databases will 'struggle to cope'

More than one in three chief information officers (CIOs) believe that their systems will struggle to cope with the volume of information produced in the future.

According to a new poll of IT professionals, databases and datacentres will become overwhelmed by the volumes of information produced within the next two to five years.

The survey by HP warns that firms need to transform their datacentres in order to cope with soaring levels of demand for business services and applications.

Computer World reports that HP carried out more than 160 interviews across Europe, the US and Latin America for the study.

Uday Kumaraswami, vice president of consulting and integration for HP services, said: "Today customers are facing multiple challenges - the explosion of data, a growing mobile workforce and the need for access to real-time information."

Effective business and accounting software can streamline business processes for companies, control costs and reduce the burden on databases.

A recent report claimed that the amount of data created in 2007 outstripped available storage space for the first time last year.
