An independent body that assesses academic certificates from around the world has compared the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) professional qualification to a Master Degree.
The National Recognition Information Centre for the United Kingdom (UK NARIC) awarded the accountancy qualification a point score of 35 - the same as for an MSc.
Robert Jelly, CIMA's director of education, welcomed the verdict, insisting it accurately reflects the "prestige" and "portability" of the award.
He added: "It is further proof of the relevance of the CIMA qualification to business and the strategic value our members add to organisations."
The news may interest business and accountancy firms looking to boost productivity and monitor progress by installing accounting software.
Last month CIMA announced its council member Professor Trevor Hassall had been honoured for his contribution to accounting education by the British Accounting Association. He currently heads the Accounting and Business Education Research Unit at Sheffield Hallam University.
