Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology will be a big part of the EU's
accounting for
carbon emissions in future, according to the energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs.
Speaking at the Zero
Emission Platform General Assembly in Brussels, he explained that CCS is vital to reducing the
carbon emissions measurement, as well as that of other greenhouse gases, by 80 per cent in 2050.
Mr Piebalgs explained that he did not believe coal should be banned as a fuel, citing the energy supply problems created during the conflict in Georgia earlier this year as a reason to keep it to help provide diversification of supply.
He felt that CCS was the way to make sure coal was used in an environmentally-friendly way.
"We now know that CCS is the technology that can deliver the dual benefit of removing [a] significant part of the green-house gas
emissions without removing fossil fuels from the energy mix," he said.
Last month, Nick Rau, from Friends of the Earth's Energy and Climate Campaign, said that using coal with
carbon caps and CCS was preferable to other non-renewable sources.
