CBI welcomes Conservative report on tax

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has welcomed a new report published by the Conservative party's economic competitive policy group, identifying tax as a key business concern.

The group's calls for a simpler, more competitive tax and regulatory system were described by the CBI's director general Richard Lambert as the "right starting point".

"The goal of getting corporation tax down to 25 per cent, and reducing tax on small businesses, represents a welcome direction of travel after a period when the burden of business taxes has grown substantially," Mr Lambert said.

Arguing that a new focus on reducing the regulatory burden is also a "positive" move, he acknowledged that some of the group's proposals for tackling the challenges posed by tax and other business concerns are "more practical than others".

Conservative party shadow chancellor George Osborne said that the report set out a number of "imaginative" policy proposals aimed at improving the competitiveness of the UK's economy.
