Careful of the spike

News Article - 22 May 2012

Businesses looking to increase their online productivity have been advised to ensure that their site can cope with any spikes in web traffic.

Ben Camm-Jones, news editor at Web-User Magazine, said that that if the visitor peaks were significantly high then a website's performance could suffer unless its owner has taken the time to invest in enough server capacity to deal with it.

However, he added that as such surges were a relatively uncommon occurrence, there was little incentive to invest.

"The best way to deal with this issue is to invest if you can and if you can't, make sure you know what your site is capable of," Mr Camm-Jones stated, adding that if a potential customer could not access the site they would most likely go elsewhere.

Hitwise data recently revealed that there was a 10.4 per cent increase in UK home-based internet activity on February 2nd, largely put down to an increase in home workers due to extreme weather conditions.
