A total of £1 billion in energy costs has been saved by UK
businesses with help from the Carbon Trust in accounting for carbon emissions, according to the
organisation.
By helping calculate carbon footprint for businesses, 17 million
tonnes of carbon emissions have also been cut since 2001, with
companies working with the organisation cutting their footprint by
around two million tonnes last year.
This was an improvement of roughly half a million tonnes on the
year before.
The trust is also expanding internationally, with partnerships
being formed in China and the USA where its experience in carbon
emissions measurement can be shared.
"We fundamentally believe that a move to a low carbon world
represents a vast commercial opportunity for businesses," said Tom
Delay, Carbon Trust chief executive.
"In the short-term, with energy prices continuing to rise, the
need for business to become 'carbon literate' is ever
greater."
According to Chris Green, the editor of IT PRO, the telecoms
industry is a leader on environmental issues.
He cited the example of low-energy consuming blade servers, which
the sector adopted early, as an example of this.
