Calls made for a "simpler" tax system

News Article - 30 August 2007
Category: Business

The Institute of Directors (IoD) has called for the UK's tax system to be made simpler to improve overall tax administration.

Despite recent improvements, such as processing forms online, the current tax policy remains complex and hinders further advances, the IoD stated.

Richard Baron, the organisation's head of taxation, said that HM Revenue & Customs have a "tough task", yet have been making steps to help taxpayers.

"But the big prizes can only be won if the Government recognises the importance of simpler policy to good administration," Mr Baron said.

The IoD has welcomed the chancellor's comments regarding the simplification of the tax system and would support his efforts to achieve this, he added.

Richard Lambert, director general of the Confederation of British Industry, recently said that tax is a key issue affecting business in the UK and a more competitive system is a positive aim.
