The impact of climate change will cost the economy 20 times more further down the line than it would to tackle it now, one environmental commentator has claimed, which may prompt businesses to begin accounting for carbon emissions now.

Colin Butfield, head of campaigns at WWF, said: "Lots of economists are saying exactly the same thing. From a UK business point of view tackling climate change is actually going to be a very positive thing."

He explained that it was considered more positive to face the issue now than to leave it unchecked and have to deal with the impact.

Mr Butfield added that during the current economic downturn, the crisis could be aided with investment in the necessary resources needed to halt climate change.

To get businesses involved in taking steps to reducing their impact on climate change, WWF has organised Earth Hour and is asking people to "vote Earth" by switching off their lights for one hour on 20:30 GMT on March 28th.
