Businesses 'should take care when using green credentials'

News Article - 02 February 2009
Category:

Carbon emissions reporting for businesses should be conducted with care as companies should only use their green credentials if they are effective, genuine and transparent.

Such is the opinion of Mark Stuart, head of research at The Chartered Institute of Marketing, who explained that that firms should take care not to claim anything that may be misleading or otherwise they may be guilty of a "greenwash".

He pointed to the holiday industry as an example and suggested that companies within the sector committed to finding lower emissions solutions - advice that may be useful to any organisation wishing to begin accounting for carbon emissions.

"You could consider communicating your sustainable credentials," Mr Stuart stated.

Meanwhile, the editor of online resource Business Green James Murray recently suggested that companies were increasingly turning to green IT - which may include carbonaccounting software - to help them cut their energy costs due to the economic downturn.
