Microsoft is developing a business solution by combining SQL Server 2005 analytics server and reporting servers with Excel 2007 as the foundation.

The platform, PerformancePoint, is to be the next generation of business intelligence tools, building on the progress of previous tools like Business Scorecard, internetnews.com reports.

PerformancePoint aims to enable more workers across a company to benefit from capabilities such as planning, reporting and dash-boarding, and is now being reviewed by the computer giant's developer community.

"We're trying to make broader deployment easier and more cost-effective," Michael Smith, Microsoft director of marketing for PerformancePoint, told the website.

"It advances our strategy to make Office more strategic to our customers," he added.

According to the website, the platform has a template function which can aid businesses in reducing how many individual spreadsheets it creates, limiting the scope for human error. In addition, employees can share reports they have produced with others who do not have the program.

Microsoft states that PerformancePoint is a performance management application which aims to help companies in the effective planning and management of their business.
