Companies who have taken steps this year to begin accounting for carbon may be interested to know that one sector commentator has claimed that businesses play a key role in promoting green behaviours.

Writing on the online pages of Business Green, Paul Thomas explains that such firms should not shy away from techniques that pull on the heart strings in order to raise the public's awareness on these issues.

"Three years ago only 50 per cent of the top 250 companies around the world included sustainability in their business reporting. This is now up to 80 per cent," he explained.

Mr Thomas noted that this revealed that firms were increasingly integrating environmental responsibilities into their major business plans.

However, he added that some businesses were afraid to pass on their message to consumers as they were concerned they would appear overbearing.

Meanwhile, Business Green's James Murray has stated that progress is being made in the green business movement at a pace that would have been "unimaginable" 18 months ago.
