British firms praised for green awareness

Companies in the UK have been placed top in a table of environmental IT awareness across Europe.

According to the BEA European Sustainable IT Survey, a lack of knowledge of appropriate energy-saving options is hindering companies from adopting green IT practices.

The poll found that more than 70 per cent of IT executives in the UK place recycling technology and reducing waste as their top green priority.

However, the study also discovered that one third of organisations in Europe currently have no plans in place to cut their IT-related energy consumption, with cost cited as the major reason for not investing in environmentally-friendly technology.

Just 27 per cent of the 480 European organisations surveyed claimed to have a plan in place to slash energy consumption and emissions resulting from IT use, ten per cent have prepared a plan but still have to implement it, 22 per cent are drawing up plans and one third (33 per cent) have not started to prepare greener IT policies.

Access Accounting has created a new accounting software package that allows companies to measure their energy use, make changes to control costs and reduce their impact on the environment to enhance competitiveness.
