A third of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK believe the country's laws make it bad for business, according to research.

The study by entrepreneur think tank the Tenon Forum also discovered that over a quarter (26 per cent) of business leaders are considering moving abroad within the next three years because of both legislation and economic fluctuations.

Among those who had taken their company through a recession in the past, the figure rose to 30 per cent, while one in 20 of every respondent already had business plans in place to begin working in other countries.

"Entrepreneurs are genuinely struggling in the current legislative and economic environment and the government must heed this call for help in order to avoid losing some of the country's most talented business people," said Tenon head of tax, Andrew Jupp.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics released today (October 24th) showed that the economy had shrank between July and September.

Economic output dropped by 0.5 per cent, the biggest fall since 1990 and the first since 1992.
