Boosting business growth a ‘priority’ to avoid Eurozone slowdown

News Article - 16 January 2012
Category: Business

The United Kingdom has the "talent and energy" to avoid becoming embroiled in the "inevitable slowdown" of the Eurozone economy, according to John Longworth, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).

Mr Longworth has however intimated business growth across the UK should be made a priority to ensure the nation can "lead on the international stage".

He said: "In the face of economic concerns, and the debt crisis in Europe, businesses across Britain, large and small, are busting a gut to find new markets and grow their firms.

"That's why we all have to recognise that business is a force for good. It is at the centre of the economy, and it is only business that can create recovery and deliver all the good things we want, like education, healthcare and pensions."

The Government is also calling upon rural areas of the country to support the regrowth of the UK economy.

Rural Growth Networks are also being set up to support countryside businesses and the rural economy in a £15 million pilot project that seeks to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) overcome any barrier to growth, be it poor infrastructure or technology facilities.

These rural networks will be situated at various underused business parks, brownfield sites or sites that already have the green light for commercial and industrial development, in an effort to unlock the potential of rural areas for the national economy.

Longworth added: "We must build an enterprise culture in Britain and help people to employ themselves so that one-day they will employ others.

"Politicians have shown a level of resolve and determination to help business succeed this year. However, they have been nowhere near radical enough and have not been able to tackle the culture that deems business and wealth creation as negative."
