Bill Gates: Vista security must be protected

News Article - 22 May 2012

Microsoft boss Bill Gates has announced that the software and technology must do more to protect Windows Vista users from hackers.

According to Mr Gates, the best ways to ensure that users do not fall victim to identity thieves and other online crooks is to use IPv6 and IPsec, which are native to the Vista operating system, reports the Register.

The replacement internet protocol, along with the security suite, should be used in conjunction with smart-card access rather than passwords, Mr Gates told the RSA Conference, run by computer protection firm RSA Security.

However, he added: "A large part of what we do going forward is not dealing with the engineering aspects of the software we build, but we have to deal with the fact errors do happen whether by accident or intentional."

The suggested process is to be implemented in Microsoft's Longhorn Server, providing simple and flawless access across various applications, Mr Gates added.

Among the features included in Vista to boost security is user account control, a Windows firewall and address space layout randomisation.
