Many auditors see their profession as a stepping stone to more senior roles in other industries, according to a new survey.
A report by www.careersinaudit.com stated that almost two-thirds of respondents planned to leave the industry within five years and use their business skills elsewhere, in areas such as control, consultation and corporate finance.
The report also found that nine out of ten auditors were under thirty, while 47 per cent saw the prospect of career development as an incentive to work in the industry.
Max Williamson, chief executive officer of www.careersinaudit.com, said: "Auditing is a young and vibrant profession which offers the opportunity to develop a varied and successful business career.
"With former heads of internal audit teams now moving into [chief financial officer] positions, auditing is a genuine stepping stone for the business leaders of tomorrow."
Although the majority of respondents had received a pay rise in the last year, 85 per cent said they did not see their long-term future in the profession.
