Amount of data 'exceeds storage capacity'

The amount of data worldwide has exceeded the storage capacity available, a new report claims.

According to analyst IDC, for the first time ever businesses are unable to store all the data they want, with the amount of information created, replicated and captured last year soaring by ten per cent above predictions to 281 exabytes.

The study states that there was 264 exabytes of available storage in 2007, indicating that production of data has outpaced capacity and potentially threatening future business health.

Much of the data created each year is not stored, but IDC predicts that data produced globally will increase to 1,800 exabytes in 2011, ten times the total recorded in 2006.

Tom Sellers, senior storage consultant for Abacus Solutions, told CRN: "One of the biggest problems we see is: how do we deal with the tremendous amount of information out there continues that continues to grow?"

As companies rapidly increase the amount of data they are producing, they are advised to invest in effective management reporting and accounting software in order to handle it more efficiently.

Business and accounting software can enhance business performance and streamline processes to boost productivity and business growth.
